Brad Haami discusses the way in which Māori in the nineteeth century identified with the Jewish Biblical stories and how Hebrew names were adopted in the naming of persons and became embedded in the whenua (land). He begins with a discussion of the symbolism and meanings of the olive tree, from the Scriptures.
Dead Sea Guardians had its first viewing last weekend in Auckland. The film was welcomed to Aotearoa by the Indigenous Coalition for Israel representative, Te Rata Hikairo, who opened the screening with a karakia and mihi. The film weaves together the histories of ancestors, of people of the land and the Dead Sea and speaks of the kaitiakitanga (guardianship) of precious resources, places and spaces.
So, while Israel faces threats from those within and without, seeking to kill and destroy, another battle rages in the intellectual space, where Israel comes under unrelenting attack from media, academia and civil society.
In the past month there have been four terrorist attacks in Israel in four different locations, leaving 14 people dead and many more injured.
Dr Soomekh presented an overview of the history of the Jewish people in the land of Israel, presenting Biblical, genetic and archeological evidence and Dr Trotter (beginning at 23 minutes) discussed the way in which indigeneity is being weaponized against Israel, the legal and political issues and why it’s important for Jews to claim their indigeneity to Israel.
In an online event co-sponsored by twenty-seven international organisations, ICFI directors address the arguments for Jewish indigeneity. Presented 13 January 2021 (14 January NZT).
