Newsletter 18 December 2023

Two years ago we established the Indigenous Coalition for Israel, in order to stand in solidarity with Jews as the indigenous people of Israel and to stand against antisemitism.

Never in my worst nightmare did I envisage that both these facets would come to the fore in the way they have, after the horrendous tragedy that befell Israel on 7 October. Even before Israel had had time to identify their victims, a process that is still ongoing, the world erupted in condemnation of Israel. The main justification for this ideological attack on Israel was the propagation of the false narrative that “Jews are foreign colonizers who have dispossessed the indigenous Palestinians”. Even if it were true, (it is not), it would not justify the mass sadism that occurred on that dark day. However, much of the world has turned a blind eye to the atrocities and now the call for ceasefire is increasing.

The past two months have kept us busy as we’ve responded to the crises, challenged indigenous leaders and supported our Jewish friends.

Hui

Pastor Tawhiri Littlejohn organised a hui in Northland to stand in solidarity with Israel, as well as a full day seminar to inform and educate leaders in the North. Tawhiri also led a Māori leaders’ response to Te Pāti Māori co-leader Debbie Ngarewa Packer’s call to expel the Israeli ambassador.

Ngarewa-Packer’s ill-informed statements have continued to cause concern and we have continued to call out her harmful rhetoric. I produced a video response below and we issued a press release signed by multiple Māori leaders.

A number of rallies have been held in NZ’s cities to express solidarity with Israel. Co-director Hon Alfred Ngaro and I gave speeches at the Rally in Auckland, 20 October 2023. Mine is here.

In the wake of 7 October, I have been interviewed a number of times by Māori TV and Radio, as well as by Sean Plunket on The Platform.

SCHOLARS-IN-RESIDENCE COURSE AT OXFORD

The battle against antisemitism must be fought on multiple fronts, including in academia. Earlier this year I had the privilege of attending a scholars-in-residence course held by the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy at University of Oxford, UK. Learning from world-leading experts in the field was a great opportunity and we are investigating ways of disseminating this important information. We interviewed some of the speakers, which you will find on YouTube and our website.

JERUSALEM

I also had the opportunity to meet the Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem, Fleur Hassan-Nahoum in September. We began discussions on some exciting indigenous initiatives and I have been reaching out globally to work with other indigenous groups. We look forward to sharing those projects with you in the coming months.

2023 IN REVIEW

The year began with speaking engagements in Gisborne and Rotorua. We also had the opportunity to meet leading Israel advocates Yoseph Haddad and Emily Schrader. One of the videos we created with Yoseph at Auckland University went viral, taking off again after the recent conflict.

We encourage you to peruse our YouTube account to catch up on content you might have missed.

Social media is at the forefront of the campaign for hearts and minds, and we have been expanding our outreach into those areas. ICFI has a growing presence on Facebook. We have branched out into X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram and will shortly be starting a TikTok account as well. Thanks to my wonderful team of volunteers who have put in many hours to combat disinformation on these platforms; Shirley-Anne Hodgson, Annabel Noar, Te Rata Hikairo and Don Thompson.

We continue to raise awareness through videos and articles. We invite you to explore the many articles we have curated on the website, that address the many questions concerning the Jewish indigenous connections. For example:

Gaza and the world’s outrage

“Colonization” is a deeply flawed explanation for 7 October

The Māori view on Palestine

Alfred and I are among the lead signatories of A Joint Christian Statement regarding the events of 7 October and the global surge in antisemitism. We encourage you to read the statement, add your name and forward it to your network.

There is also this very worthy petition by Rev Dr Wayne Te Kaawa to designate Hamas a terrorist organisation, demand the release of hostages and speak out against the unprecedented levels of antisemitism. Please consider adding your name.

DONATE

Our work to date has been done exclusively on a voluntary basis. We have had a few donations towards our external expenses but we are in need of support in order to develop this vital work.

Would you consider supporting Indigenous Coalition For Israel?

We have some big plans for 2024. Please consider helping us in this work by making a donation.
